Are You Craving Sweet, Salty, Spicy Food? Here's Why!

For most, food cravings are part of everyday living, and, in most cases, it's not questioned. Eating the food you're craving is the focus, and nothing else. Being that we're a make-up of beliefs, emotions, thoughts - these areas are factored into, and directly linked to any physical experience or decision we make. Therefore, a craving is directly linked to something we're believing, feeling, and thinking.

When you're intuned with yourself, you'll be able to hear when your body communicates what it needs for proper nutrition. This is different from a craving. A craving can inform us that a certain nutrient is missing from your diet. You can use this information to find out exactly what is needed, and provide your body with the most healthy, and appropriate choice(s). For example, craving nuts can reflect the body's need for essential fatty acids, which supports circulatory, skin, joint, immune, and nerve health. You may find it easier on the body to take essential fatty acids supplements. Nuts can be especially hard to digest. If you decide to eat the nuts, take digestive enzymes to assist your body to digest it and absorb the nutrients you need, which decreases cravings. In most cases, when you eat the food you're craving, your body will show signs of upset - nausea, gas, bloating, skin rash, constipation/diarrhea, and other digestive upsets - because it doesn't want the food you're craving, just a specific nutrient.

You can learn from the craving, and create changes in your food choices, and overall health, moving forward.

Here's a list of cravings and their possible emotional source. Can you relate to any:

Sweets - feeling a lack of love in one's life, craving love

Salt - feeling anger or rage

Spicy - feeling defensive

When you can identify the possible link between the food craving and your emotions, you can make an empowered decision. For example, if you're craving sweets (i.e. cake, cookies, pastries, etc), you can check in with yourself to learn where you feel love is missing...and then, do something loving for yourself - go to the beach, dance, give yourself a foot bath, compliment yourself - whatever brings you love and joy. You can also present loving gifts to others - compliment, ask a family member how she's doing and listen, volunteer your time, go hiking with a friend, and so on. Give to others what you would like to receive. When you address the root source, you'll change your experience with cravings.

Allow the experience of cravings to learn more about your feelings, and love yourself deeper. And, listen, if you indulge in your cravings, from time to time, it's ok!

p.s. As a Holistic Nutrition Educator, I support women to create a healthier relationship with themselves and food by assisting them to prioritize emotional, mental, and physical nourishment, and be able to consciously know when they're hungry, what to eat, how much to eat, and feel satisfied, and in joy throughout the journey. They place little to no focus on the scale, and deepen self-love, which contributes to making healthier and kinder choices about food.
